From mysanantonionews.com:
Texas House Speaker Joe Straus said Tuesday he is concerned that the political and financial cost of a bitter GOP gubernatorial primary election could undermine “the delicate balance” he developed earlier this year with Democrats in the GOP-controlled House.
Straus said he’s worried the increasingly nasty tone in the GOP primary race for governor could turn off potential Republican voters and disrupt his efforts at narrowing the often-bitter partisan divide in the lower chamber.
The consensus Straus forged with Democrats this session will be critical when the Legislature convenes in January 2011, he said, because preliminary estimates indicate the state will be facing a $10 billion shortfall.
Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison is challenging incumbent Gov. Rick Perry, Texas’ longest-serving chief executive, in what is shaping up to be a bruising and likely expensive party primary next March. Straus worries donors will focus on the governor’s race, to the detriment of down-ballot GOP House incumbents.
