From The Sun Chronicle:
Making an interim appointment to fill a vacant U.S. Senate seat might make sense, but changing the succession law now smacks of politics, Republican state legislators said Monday.
The GOP lawmakers said they would probably support a change under different circumstances, but believe the current proposal allowing for an interim appointment is a partisan power play by Democrats.
U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy wrote to state officials before he died last week asking that they amend the law so the governor can appointment someone to fill his seat until a special election is held.
