Ohio Democrat Secretary of State’s Decision Should Make Her Blush

It’s not news that Ohio election law operates on a partisan basis, with county boards of election evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats and a partisan, elected secretary of state holding the uncomfortable role of tie-breaker.

But Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner’s ruling this week that Republican State Sen. Jon Husted does not reside in the Dayton-area district he represents is more than that. It’s a perfect storm of political partisanship masquerading as governance.

It’s also, of course, a complete coincidence that Brunner’s ruling could be used to embarrass Husted, who wants to succeed her as Ohio’s next secretary of state. (Brunner is running for the U.S. Senate.)

Brunner’s ruling breaks an equally partisan elections board deadlock in Montgomery County.
