IN: Legislators Study Redistricting

Via the Louisville Courier Journal:

A legislative study committee is likely to recommend new guidelines to direct lawmakers who’ll redraw Indiana district maps after the 2010 census, the group’s chairwoman said Tuesday. Advertisement The proposals could call for the Indiana House and Senate to draw legislative and congressional districts so they’re more compact and follow local government boundaries and to involve the public more in the redistricting process, said Sen. Sue Landske, R-Cedar Lake, who heads the Census Data Advisory Committee.

But it’s unlikely that the General Assembly will turn the 2011 map-drawing over to an independent commission — the key recommendation from a visiting redistricting expert. That would require an amendment to the state constitution, something that couldn’t be accomplished before the next maps must be finished but could be in place for later redistricting efforts, Landske said.
