Appearing at the National Press Club, Lewis, who succeeded Rathke last year, promised that come what may, even congressional efforts to defund it can’t kill the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which she said relies on federal money for only about 10 percent of its annual $20 million to $25 million budget.
“So long as one ACORN member is willing to have a meeting in their house or one church lets us have a meeting in their basement, we will go on, ” Lewis said.
The latest major development in the very public siege of ACORN in the media, in Congress and in Baton Rouge came with the news Monday that Caldwell’s office had issued new subpoenas for ACORN records in New Orleans, where it had been based — the headquarters is relocating to Washington — as part of his office’s investigation into the embezzlement of ACORN funds by Rathke’s brother, Dale, in 1999 and 2000.
