OK: Republican Formally Enters Race for Attorney General

An Oklahoma City lawyer, Ryan Leonard, formally announced his candidacy for state attorney general Wednesday.

Leonard, a Republican, is the first person in the race to succeed the incumbent, Drew Edmondson, a Democrat who is running for governor.

“This is a critically important office at a critically important time,” said Leonard, 37. “It’s important we have an advocate to stand up for the people of Oklahoma.”

Leonard said he intends to combat the state’s growing methamphetamine problem through the aggressive use of multicounty grand juries. He also promised to guard against unwarranted federal intrusion in areas such as health care and energy policy. “It’s important to protect the balance between the state and federal governments,” he said.
