TX: 3 or 4 Seats – nobody knows yet

As the nation’s economy struggles to recover, fewer people are moving to new jobs across the country, and with less migration, Texas now appears poised to gain three — rather than potentially four — additional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, according to new estimates being released today.

Despite projections showing that major cities from Chicago to New York are keeping more of their residents who were believed to be leaving, bound for areas such as Texas or Arizona, nothing is final until the 2010 Census, officials say.

“The numbers could still change,” said Jim Riddlesperger, a political science professor at Texas Christian University. “Texas could end up with the four seats that previously had been estimated. It’s too early to make that conclusion.”

Texas now has 32 congressional districts, second to California, which has 53.
