WI: Troubled Lawmaker Back on Assembly Floor

A state lawmaker who is facing multiple driving-under-the-influence charges returned to Madison on Wednesday to vote on a drunken driving bill.

Rep. Jeff Wood, a Chippewa Falls independent, has been arrested three times in the last year for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. An Assembly committee is considering whether to recommend the full body should strip him of his job.

The Assembly convened in extraordinary session Wednesday to vote on a measure that would make first-offense drunken driving a misdemeanor if a child under age 16 is in the car and make it a felony at a fourth offense rather than at a fifth. It also would expand a program that allows judges to reduce sentences for repeat offenders who go through treatment.
