From SFGate.com:
In an attempt to rebrand their image, California’s branch of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, better known as ACORN, is breaking from the national organization and reforming with a new name and stricter controls over its finances.
Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, or ACCE, will have “no legal, financial or structural ties to ACORN,” Executive Director Amy Schur said Wednesday. All Bay Area ACORN offices have closed. The new group plans to focus on organizing low- and middle-income people and may continue voter registration efforts. It will stop its tax preparation and other service work.
