From the Sacramento Bee:
Minutes after Martin Garrick was named Assembly Republican leader Tuesday, he sent a clear message to any Democrats hoping to bridge a massive budget gap with higher taxes: Forget it.
A businessman and former member of President Ronald Reagan’s administration, Garrick bills himself as a “lifelong conservative advocate.”
“Raising taxes when we’re already the highest state in sales tax and the second highest in income tax is not the way that we’re going to solve the problem,” Garrick said of a projected $19.9 billion shortfall.
By choosing the Solana Beach lawmaker to replace outgoing Sam Blakeslee as leader, the Assembly Republican Caucus signaled its intent to take a hard line in budget talks, analysts said.
