Democrat on Being a Candidate and Attorney General

Georgia voters never promoted an attorney general to the post of governor in the 20th century, and the last one that tried it failed to get his party’s nomination. Thurbert Baker aims to change the trend in the new century.

“I feel that I am the person to tackle these problems,” he said Friday.

He is equally certain that he will serve out his term, even though his predecessor, Michael Bowers, resigned when he ran for governor in 1997. Baker may have never become attorney general if Bowers hadn’t resigned, letting then-Gov. Zell Miller appoint his House floor leader to the post, which he has won election to three times since.

Baker says he has a contract with the voters to complete his term.
