This fall, voters in
the fate of two important ballot amendments dealing with the issues of gay marriage
and the death penalty. Attorney
General Lautenschlager has sought to add her own color to the situation by providing
controversial interpretations, which could swing the vote.
The Associated Press
points out that revisions may already be needed on Attorney
General Peg’s ballot interpretation dealing with the death penalty.
“In May, the
Legislature approved a non-binding referendum that asks voters whether the
death penalty should be enacted in cases of first-degree intentional homicide,
where the conviction is supported by DNA evidence.
But the explanation given
by Lautenschlager's office is for a slightly different question – whether the
death penalty should be enacted in cases of multiple intentional homicide,
where the murders are vicious and the convictions supported by DNA evidence.
The explanation is based
on an early version of the referendum question, said a spokesman
for Sen. Scott Fitzgerald (R- Juneau), a co-sponsor of the bill. He said that
the correct language should not include references to vicious or multiple
homicides.”
