A plan being floated by Gov. Blagojevich to pay for mass transit would siphon revenue from the gasoline sales tax in Cook and the collar counties and route the money to the CTA and its fellow transit agencies, a spokesman for House Minority leader Tom Cross said Wednesday.

CHICAGO — A proposal to divert a share of state gasoline taxes to Chicago’s mass-transit systems was rebuffed Wednesday by Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, who said he still prefers a regional sales tax hike to prevent service cuts and fare hikes planned for early next month.
