What seems like practical genius in November 2007, will seem like political ineptitude in November 2008. Voters love transparency – and heaven forbid something should happen – say like Tennessee Waltz – and you pair voting to close doors with a scandal – and you have a fantastic line of attack in a campaign. Or at least a cute cartoon. Voters love more light on the legislative process – not less.
A legislative panel is recommending a change that critics say would substantially weaken Tennessee’s law on open meetings by allowing local politicians to meet in private to discuss public business and even decide how they will vote on issues.
